And this little piggy was wrapped in a blanket!
This pull apart ring of little smokies wrapped in soft dough couldn't be more fun to eat and share. Pop these pigs in a blanket in the oven while you make your final choice for family movie night, then cozy up in a pillow fort and dig in!
Directions
- In a bowl, dissolve yeast with 1 teaspoon of the sugar in warm water. After about a minute, add butter, milk, 1 egg, salt, remaining sugar, and 2 cups of the flour.
- On a flour dusted surface, knead dough until smooth and stretchy. Place in a bowl coated in olive oil, turning dough over once so that the top is covered in oil as well. Cover with plastic wrap and let rest at room temperature for about an hour.
- Have your children help punch down the dough to get the air out, then set dough on a flour dusted surface and cut in half.
- Roll each half of dough out to a 12-inch disk, then cut each disk with a large knife or pizza cutter into about 12 triangles. Starting at the base of each triangle, cut into 3 long, skinny triangles. You should end up with about 72 triangles total.
- Preheat oven to 350F. Prepare egg wash by whisking cold water with remaining egg, then set mixture aside.
- Place a little smokie sausage on one of the dough triangles, then roll the sausage up in to the dough and place in a 12-inch skillet. Repeat with the rest of the sausages and dough triangles, placing in concentric circles in the skillet starting at the edge. You should end up with 3 rings of pigs in a blanket. Set an oven-safe bowl in the middle of your skillet.
- Brush the pigs in a blanket with egg wash, then bake for about 35-40 minutes.
- For a dipping sauce to pour into the center bowl, heat up 1 can of chili, or try some queso, marinara, or salsa.
